Herbert TolmichJune 28, 1927 - September 15, 2011Herbert Tolmich, 84 of Norwalk, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Norwalk Hospital. Born June 28, 1927, he was the son of the late Yetta Lader and Philip Tolmich. Herb was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Sonia, daughter-in-law Sherry Tolmich, and brothers Larry and Harold Tolmich. He is survived by his brother Jerry Tolmich, daughter Phyllis Conklin of Norwalk, son Alan Tolmich and his wife Vivian of Shelton, and son Steven Tolmich of Norwalk. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael Conklin, Daniel Conklin, Andrew Tolmich, Justin Tolmich, Ryan Tolmich and Allie Tolmich. Everyone who knew him dubbed him The Cookie Man. He started his baking career at Nabisco in 1949 until he joined Pepperidge Farm in 1962. There he developed and produced cookies, cakes and crackers and was most known for Goldfish crackers. He has lectured throughout the country and the American Institute of Baking honored him with The Baker of the Year award. He was named the Thomas Edison of baking in Forbes magazine and written about in the New England Monthly. Since he retired from Pepperidge Farm in 1988 he has traveled the world as a consultant to the baking industry developing new products until his death. He had been an active respected member of Temple Beth El for over 40 years. Services will be held on Sunday, September 18, at 1:00 PM at Congregation Beth El, 109 East Ave., Norwalk. Burial will follow in Beth El Memorial Park, Richards Avenue, Norwalk, Ct. Contributions in his name may be made to Congregation Beth El, 109 East Ave., Norwalk, CT 06851 or Norwalk Marching Band, 23 Calvin Murphy Drive, Norwalk, CT 06851. Herb and Phyliss were customers of mine at Norwalk Firestone.Over the years Herb exuded such humor and kindness to me and my crew.A loyal customer a great human being and we’ve lost a gem of a person.
