Aldo J. VanderWel
March 18, 1918 - January 1, 2013
Aldo J. VanderWel, age 94, husband of the late Madelyn VanderWel died peacefully on January 1, 2013 in Norwalk, CT. Born and raised in New York City, he was the son of the late Iola (an artist and hat designer) and Peter VanderWel.
Al was a decorated veteran of World War II where he served in the 3rd Battalion, 22nd Infantry. He was involved in several major battles including the Normandy D-Day landing and the Battle of the Bulge. His regiment assaulted Utah Beach on June 6, 1944, as part of VII Corps in the D-Day Invasion. He was awarded three Bronze Stars for valorous conduct in combat. The discipline and bravery Al exhibited in the army never left him as his family and friends will attest.
After his retirement, Al enjoyed creating model ships and drawing and won several awards for his detailed artwork. Al will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind, polite man – “always able to put a smile on your face”.
Mr. VanderWel is survived by his daughter, Claudia V. Conroy and his grandson, James V. Conroy of Westport, CT. In addition to his wife Madelyn, he was predeceased by his daughter Lydia.
A Christian Burial and interment with full military honors will take place 11:00 AM, Friday, January 4th at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY.
