Southbury – Alton “Al” H. Smith, 86 of Southbury, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018.  He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Nancy (McNamara) Smith.  The Smiths’ resided in Stamford and Waterbury for many years.  Most recently, Mr. Smith resided at Heritage Village in Southbury, CT.

Born in Mount Vernon, NY, December 14, 1931, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Harry and Margaret (Hubbard) Smith.

Mr. Smith worked as Vice President for Omega Engineering for 10 years, received an honorary master’s degree from the University of New Haven and had several business ventures thereafter.  He retired from Greater Waterbury Transit at the age of 79.  His work ethic was unparalleled.  He was a member of the local Teamsters union.

Mr. Smith enjoyed boating, fishing, reading, gardening and discussing politics.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Southbury, CT.  Among his proudest achievements was serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Survivors include two sons, Gregory Smith and wife Joyce; Michael Smith, three daughters, Margaret Collins; Noreen Palumbo and husband Alfred “Flip” Palumbo and Bernadette Nuelle and husband Mark.  He had 8 grandchildren, Gregory Smith, Jr.; Erin (Smith) Hansen and her husband Kevin; Michael Collins and his wife Caitlin; Kelly (Palumbo) and husband Jason Graham; Christopher Nuelle; Thomas Palumbo; Sean Nuelle and Matthew “Mattie” Palumbo.  In addition, two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and William Hansen.  One sister, Barbara Nette.  Mr. Smith was predeceased by his brother Stanley Smith and his daughter-in-law, Eileen.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 10:00am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT.  Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Falls Village, CT.
