Anne Caddell

Anne (McShane) Caddell, longtime resident of Fairfield County, died early Saturday morning at home in Marlborough, MA, at age 88. She was born in Legga, County Longford, in the Republic of Ireland, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1947, arriving on her 20th birthday.
Besides raising two children, Mrs. Caddell spent many years working at the Union Trust Company in New Canaan, and then at the New Canaan Inn. In her leisure time she demolished crosswords and other puzzles, and enjoyed frequent trips to Mohegan Sun Casino, in an often-successful search for a lucky slot machine.
She was a member of Assumption Church in Westport for nearly 20 years, and over her lifetime was able to make many trips back to “the Old Country,” where she enjoyed the view from the hilltop perch of the modest farmhouse where she grew up.
Mrs. Caddell was preceded in death by her husband John F. Caddell, her sister Mary Anne McGuire, and brother Michael McShane. She is survived by two children, John M., of Camp Hill, PA; and Maureen, of Framingham, MA; two grandchildren; and three sisters who share her keen intelligence and fiercely independent nature – Sister Catherine McShane DMJ and Sister Teresa McShane DMJ, both living in Los Angeles, California, and Peggy McShane of Slough, England.
Relatively late in life she won a trip to Las Vegas to compete on a game show. Despite just missing out on the first prize, the three-day stay at the Venetian Hotel remained a fondly-remembered highlight.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 13th at 10:00 AM in Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Avenue, Westport, CT. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk.
Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Whittingham Cancer Center, c/o Norwalk Hospital Foundation, 34 Maple Street, Norwalk, CT 06850-3894.

  1. Dear Maureen and John Michael and family,
Joey and I were so very sorry to hear about your dear mothers passing. She was a very dear woman and I so enjoyed hearing the stories my mother shared of all the fun times she had with your mom when they first came to the states, their nights out and the dances and parties, but especially the fun times at Mohegan Sun, playing the slots…..your mom and ours had long chats on the telephone, oh how wonderful to get those days back, but now they are all together in heaven, singing, carrying on and sharing a pot of tea and Irish soda bread.

Please know that we keep you in our thoughts and prayers, this is and will be a tough time, but it will get easier, and those memories you have will comfort you in those tough days. Always talk about her and she will be right beside you.

I am so so sorry I never made the trip over to see her while she was in Massachusetts. She was my only link to my mother of the early days. Thank you for sharing her picture.

    Much love,
    Anne Marie and Joey xoxo
