Evelyn P. Carbonell

July 10, 1924 ~ September 21, 2014

Evelyn Blanche (Porges) Carbonell, 90, of Coconut Grove, FL and New Canaan, passed away on September 21st, in Stamford Hospital after a brief illness. Born on July 10, 1924, Evy was raised in New York City. At a time when admission was limited to the highest achieving students, Evy obtained both undergraduate and master’s degrees from the City College of New York.
A lifelong avid reader and master of languages, Evy was fluent in both French and Spanish and conversational in her parents’ native Hungarian. After college she worked as a speech specialist, audiologist, and “English as a Second Language” teacher at Ohio University and also at Purdue University. At Purdue she met her husband of nearly 63 years, the late Dr. Robert J. Carbonell, a scientist who was born and raised in El Salvador. In the early 1950’s, Bob and Evy lived in San Salvador, where their first child was born. Upon their return to the U.S they settled in Stamford. While raising a family that grew to include five children, Evy resumed her teaching career. She taught ESL to adults in night classes at Rice School and later taught French to middle school students at Turn of River School. She was beloved by students of all ages for her thoughtfulness, kindness and gentle nature.
Evy retired from teaching to support Bob’s corporate career, which involved relocations to Sparta, NJ, Winston Salem, NC, Atlanta, GA and ultimately south Florida. A talented baker, needle pointer and mother, Evy made each stop along their journey a welcome home for visits from their children and grandkids. They spent more than 25 years in south Florida, which became a frequent reunion spot for the extended Carbonell family. Visitors were overwhelmed by her bakery-quality muffins, cakes and cookies and her generous gifts of handmade blankets and pillows. She loved to feed everyone and loved to please. As a final touch, no visitors were allowed to leave without agreeing to take a number of recommended books from her overflowing personal library.
Evy was predeceased by her husband Bob, who passed away in 2013. She is survived by her five children and their spouses: Armando and Jean (Revell) Carbonell of West Barnstable and Cambridge, MA; Robert and Patricia (Fairchild) Carbonell of Chapel Hill, NC; Margaret Carbonell Smith and Greg Smith of Tualatin, OR; John and Cheryl (Bloom) Carbonell of Norwalk, CT; and Juliet (Carbonell) Marcus and Bo Marcus of New Canaan, CT. She was the cherished grandmother of sixteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother John Porges and her sisters Juliet Tieger and Lillian Porges and is survived by many nieces and nephews.
The loss of Evy’s beautiful, selfless spirit leaves a void in the hearts of all whose lives were touched by her genuine kindness and love.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27th at The Congregational Church of New Canaan on 23 Park Street.
