George A. Shimko

George A. Shimko, 69, of Norwalk, husband of Mary Ann Kurensky Shimko, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Monday evening, July 6th, at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Born August 30, 1945, son of Mary Sirade Shimko, of Norwalk, and the late George Shimko, he was a life long Norwalk resident. Mr. Shimko was a Vietnam War veteran of the U. S. Air Force. Following duty, he was employed by Homelite, in Port Chester, N. Y. Due to the illness of his father, he left Homelite; returning to Norwalk and took over the management of the family’s Sunshine Restaurant, on the Post Road. Later Mr. Shimko operated Presley Auto Parts and then went to Highfield Manufacturing. He retired several years ago from Highfield after almost thirty years with the firm, and was a holder of multiple patens.

Survivors in addition to his wife and mother include a daughter; Melinda Vieux and her husband Rob, of Trumbull, one son; Chris Shimko and his wife Lauren, of Norwalk, five grandchildren; Tyler, Cole and Julia Vieux, Rhys and Evan Shimko, a sister; Barbara Zinsser and husband Fred, of Norwalk, one brother; Tom Shimko and his wife Denise, of Wilton, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:00 A.M. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Avenue. Burial with military honors will follow in St. John Cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday, July 9th, at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M.

  1. Love and prayers to the whole Shimko family. I have fond memories as a child and as an adult being with the CT family. A lot of love and laughter. May God grant you all peace during this difficult time and may the memories bring you joy and laughter.
