Germaine C. Benanti
April 29, 1926 - February 11, 2017
Germaine C. Benanti of Norwalk, CT passed away peacefully on February 11, 2017 after she lost a long and brave battle against ovarian cancer. She was our beloved mother, grandmother, best friend and confidant. She was predeceased by her husband, Hector J. Benanti and son, Philip M. Benanti.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY, and attended NYU where she met her late husband. (While at NYU she worked as a hat model.) They moved to Danbury, Connecticut in the early 1950’s and she helped him start a very successful advertising agency. After he died in 1969, she moved to Wilton, Ct and then to Norwalk, where she resided for over 30 years.
Germaine led an unbelievably remarkable and successful life. She did so even though she was widowed at a young age and had to overcome the typical stereotypes and barriers for a woman in that era.
She went back to college in the 1960’s and obtained a Teaching Degree from Western Connecticut State University and later received a Masters in Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport.
She bought and sold houses, taught and practiced homeopathy, owned a health food store and ran a small nutrition oriented business for over thirty-four years. She loved old movies, plays, art, travel, reading the New York Times and Wall Street Journal and particularly loved playing Bridge and watching the New York Rangers. She also loved talking about and taking vitamins and homeopathy.
She was a true “character”. Funny, smart, feisty, hard working and strong willed, but very generous, and always available to help anyone who asked. She enjoyed spending countless hours helping people with their medical problems and recommending various treatments and doctors around the world.
But anyone who knew her, knew that her grandchildren were the light of her life.
She will be greatly missed by her loving son, daughter, grandchildren, daughter-in-law, nieces and nephew, and by her many, many friends.
The visiting hours are on February 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT. The Funeral will be on Friday, February 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Collins Funeral Home followed by the burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Danbury, Connecticut.
