Germaine C. Benanti

April 29, 1926 - February 11, 2017

Germaine C. Benanti of Norwalk, CT passed away peacefully on February 11, 2017 after she lost a long and brave battle against ovarian cancer.  She was our beloved mother, grandmother, best friend and confidant.  She was predeceased by her husband, Hector J. Benanti and son, Philip M. Benanti.

She was born in Brooklyn, NY, and attended NYU where she met her late husband.  (While at NYU she worked as a hat model.)  They moved to Danbury, Connecticut in the early 1950’s and she helped him start a very successful advertising agency.  After he died in 1969, she moved to Wilton, Ct and then to Norwalk, where she resided for over 30 years.

Germaine led an unbelievably remarkable and successful life.  She did so even though she was widowed at a young age and had to overcome the typical stereotypes and barriers for a woman in that era.

She went back to college in the 1960’s and obtained a Teaching Degree from Western Connecticut State University and later received a Masters in Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport.

She bought and sold houses, taught and practiced homeopathy, owned a health food store and ran a small nutrition oriented business for over thirty-four years.  She loved old movies, plays, art, travel, reading the New York Times and Wall Street Journal and particularly loved playing Bridge and watching the New York Rangers.  She also loved talking about and taking vitamins and homeopathy.

She was a true “character”.  Funny, smart, feisty, hard working and strong willed, but very generous, and always available to help anyone who asked.  She enjoyed spending countless hours helping people with their medical problems and recommending various treatments and doctors around the world.

But anyone who knew her, knew that her grandchildren were the light of her life.

She will be greatly missed by her loving son, daughter, grandchildren, daughter-in-law, nieces and nephew, and by her many, many friends.

The visiting hours are on February 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT.  The Funeral will be on Friday, February 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Collins Funeral Home followed by the burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Danbury, Connecticut.  In lieu of flowers donation in Germaine Benanti’s name to Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance or https://www.thenhf.com/ or http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/  (LinusPauling Science Center).

  • What a beautiful story about a lovely person. I’m so happy that she had such a long and successful life, overcoming adversity and enjoying the fruits of a wonderful close family of children and grandchildren. Germaine was truly a generous person, especially generous with her time and concern for others. In early 1983 the company I worked for closed it’s Danbury facility and later that year I went through a divorce which left me almost homeless and without much mental support. I met Jay earlier that year and I was soon introduced to Germaine and his sister Gigi. We spent lot’s of time with Germaine that year and I will never forget that batchelor’s Christmas as Jay and I both were nursing our ego’s during that period. Germaine was always there to provide comfort, consolation and a kind word as if I were her own son. For that she will always have a special place in my heart. Jay, Gigi, Anne, Joseph and Elaine: Our Deepest condolences on the passing of your mother and grandmother may she rest in peace.

  • To my beloved Aunt Germaine who was like a mother to me. I will miss our late night chats, while you were watching a hockey game, and talking about anything and everything. You sure had a mind and opinions of your own and didn’t hesitate to let us all know. How many times did I ask for your advice on what vitamin or supplement I should take. You were a very big part of my life for so long. I love you and will miss you always.

  • My dear Gigi and Benanti Family,

I’m sorry to hear of Germaine’s passing, and I wish you comfort in these days.

“Gigi’s Mom” was a special person to me when I met her at age 15. I had just met Gigi at Wilton High School, and Gigi was my sweet new friend who helped me transition to my new life in Wilton,CT. Germaine was the friendly, funny, loving mom who welcomed me into her home as Gigi’s friend. I remember sitting at their dinner table, being introduced to new foods, eating brown bread with cream cheese and alfalfa sprouts…never could I have imagined how good it would taste! Germaine, Gigi and I would sit in their modern home, looking at the river rushing by, and chatting.

While attending college in DeLand Florida, I was so surprised and happy that Gigi came down to attend college in St Augustine Florida. Then Germaine followed and opened a health store! What a lady, full of energy, kindness, and business savvy.

Many thanks to Germaine and the Benanti Family for some wonderful times and great memories.

  • Dear Gigi – Upon returning to Connecticut I have only today learned of Germaine’s passing. Your Mom was so amazing and I still have two homeopathic remedies in small wrapped papers she gave me so long ago – she was determined and brave. You have been there for her and I am so saddened for the loss within your entire family. From a home in Danbury to Wilton, there are many memories and someone I truly respected in many ways. She had style, wit and virtue. May her memory be for peace and bless you, Gigi always.
