Henry Thomas George Packwood


August 21, 1924 ~ March 7, 2013

Henry Thomas George Packwood, formerly of Rowayton, died peacefully on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the age of 88. Born in London, England on August 21, 1924, he was the son of the late Thomas and “Bess” Packwood. He was educated in England and served in the Royal Air Force during WWII. Henry moved to Rowayton in 1957, and was a longtime Bell Island resident. He and his former wife, Barbara Gehan Packwood raised their five children together on Bell Island where Henry loved to swim in Long Island Sound and work outdoors. He was a local bookkeeper and active member of the St Joseph Home School Association, Central Catholic High School Home School Association and the Bell Island Improvement Association.  Later in life, he enjoyed singing in the Joyful Praise Choir at St. John’s Church.

Henry is survived by former wife, Barbara Gehan Packwood of Norwalk and their children: Mary and Kevin Cornell of Orange, CT, Ann Packwood of Fairfax, VA, Tom and Maureen Packwood of Fairfield, CT, Kate and Frank McManus of Marietta, GA and Terri and Dave Mastriani of Trumbull, CT. His nine grandchildren will always remember him as “Pampa”.

Henry leaves his younger brother Michael Packwood and wife Jeanne of West Sussex, England and his sister-in-law Diana Packwood of Brighton, England.

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, March 12th, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, March 13th, at St. John Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien. Interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Henry’s name to either St Joseph Church in Norwalk or St. John Church in Darien.

  • My sincere condolences to the family during this time of sorrow, may you draw comfort from the Holy Scriptures. God promises us that there will be a resurrection back to life in the future. Jesus said, “Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.”
