Hertha Degenhardt was born September 17, 1914. She came to New York on the Columbus operated by Nord Deutscher Lloyd Bremen Lines. Her father, Max Hugo Barth was born in Bernsdorf, Germany and her mother, Anna Frieder Meier was born in Lichtenstein, Germany. Max arrived in N.Y. on June 8, 1929 on the S.S. Columbus to pave the way for the family. Hertha arrived with her mother Frieder, sister Ursula and brother Martin on July 28, 1930 at the age of 16. Her father was a knitter and operated and serviced knitting machines.
Hertha was married to Otto Mecherlen who was a watchmaker and learned his trade in Darmstadt, Germany and has one daughter, Eleanor Mihailidis. Hertha remarried April 22, 1957 to Karl Degenhardt. Karl had a German deli in the Bronx on 184th Street a block from the Grand Concourse. There she made her famous potato salad that everyone enjoyed along with a variety of salads and deli specialties.
She has been living in Wilton since 1992 with her daughter Eleanor and she enjoyed going to Ogden House for the Wednesday lunches and played bingo on Thursdays. As of May 2009, she was a resident of Wilton Meadows. She loved her garden and grew many flowers. She was loved by everyone and will be missed.
Services will be held Saturday, March 12th at 10:00 am in Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Wilton, CT. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 4: 00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
