John Konya

September 20,1957 - January 10, 2019

John Konya passed away peacefully on January 10, 2019. John was born in East St. Louis on September 20,1957, son of Patricia and Joe Konya. John was known in Fairfield County as a bass player, keyboard player and music teacher. He began playing music at the age of eight, performing music in school, church, and with various bands around his home town of Belleville, Illinois. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance and a master’s in theory and composition at Illinois State University, where he set up the school’s first computer music lab, combining his passion for music and technology.

Following graduation, he worked as music director and announcer with WGLT, an NPR radio station in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. In 1990, he was offered a position with a software company called RCS in Scarsdale, New York. He took the job and moved his family to Connecticut to work on the company’s groundbreaking radio scheduling software. After RCS, John worked many years doing IT contract work, including jobs for the NASDAQ stock exchange, Unilever, and the Royal Bank of Scotland. He became semi retired in 2015, continuing his IT work on a part time basis with the Calzone-Anvil Case Company. John was a fellow in the UCONN Encore program for professionals transitioning to jobs with non-profit organizations. In 2016, he began working with KEYS music, a music education program that serves students in the Bridgeport public schools. In his spare time, John spent many joyous mornings capturing sunrises with his camera on Woodmont Beach in Milford, CT and walking along the shoreline.

John married Connie Stites on August 4, 1984, the wedding date honoring his parent’s anniversary. He is survived by his loving family including his wife and their two children, Jonathan (Carley) Konya of Austin, Texas and Anna Konya, of Black Rock, CT, siblings including Mark (Susan) Konya of St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Mary (Phil) Weishaar of Belleville, Illinois, Paul (Debbie) Konya of Milstadt, IL, as well as many nieces and nephews around the United States. John was preceded in death by his parents.

I only knew you for a little over a year, but you will always hold a special piece of my heart. It isn’t a stretch to say I saw you like a father figure, one I never had. I’m going to miss you dearly… I already do. Wherever you are, I hope there’s music.
And to Connie, Jonathan and Anna, you have my sympathy, my empathy, and my condolences. I hope things get brighter.

  • We were privileged to know John and Connie, and daughter Anna became a close and trusted caregiver for our son Todd. I played music onstage with John more times than I can count. He was fiercely intelligent, passionate about life and music, and massively talented. He will be missed terribly by the SW CT musical community and we offer our heartfelt condolences to Connie, Anna, Jonathan and the extended family.

  • As a 45 year friend of Pat Konya, John’s mother, I can tell you that she had only wonderful things to say about her son John. She treasured the times she could go up to Connecticut to see him. May John rest in peace wit Pat.

  • This is just hard to comprehend. My memories of John are of the days of our youth; full of life, energy and a lot of smiles. I’ve thought of him often since those days and always figured that we’d hook up again and have the chance to catch up. So sorry to hear this Paul… John was a special guy. Sounds like he lived life to the fullest, and accomplished much, neither of which is a surprise. My condolences to all who knew and loved him. Rest well, John… until we meet again…
