Kelly K. Devine

June 25, 1979 - April 7, 2016

Kelly Devine, 36, of Norwalk, died in her home suddenly and unexpectedly after a brief illness on Thursday, April 7, 2016.

Born June 25, 1979 in Norwalk, she was the daughter of Jay and Cathy Devine. In addition to her parents she is survived by her brothers Kevin, Daniel and Robert, her sister Kim and her grandmother Eleanor B. Devine; all of Norwalk.

Kelly attended All Saints Catholic School and Norwalk High School, class of 1997. At Norwalk High, she was Captain of the girls’ swim team, and won the Class LL State Championship in the 50 yard freestyle. She attended the College of William and Mary, from which she graduated in 2001 with a degree in Education. While there, she was again captain of the girls swim team.

After college, Kelly taught Language Arts at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan for 12 years. Most recently she taught at New Canaan High School as a reading specialist. Kelly held a Master’s degree in Education from Fairfield University, and a Sixth-Year Certificate from Sacred Heart University.

Kelly spent her last seventeen summers as Head Swim Coach at the Shore and Country Club. Her leadership brought the Shore and Country Swim Club to a place among the top programs in the Fairfield County Swim League. Many of her athletes have had successful college swimming careers, and credit Kelly for giving them their start in swimming. She was also a member of both Shorehaven and Zeus Swim Team where she swam competitively as a youth.

Kelly was passionate about her family, especially her “baby” sister Kim. But she was equally passionate about her “extended” family, her New Canaan students and her Shore and Country swimmers, and she will be sorely missed by all of them.

In addition to her immediate family, Kelly is survived by a large and close-knit family of many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 AM in St. Philip Church, 1 Fr. Conlon Place, Norwalk. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery, Norwalk.

In her memory, her family is establishing a scholarship for the benefit of Norwalk High School students interested in pursuing a career in Language Arts. Contributions can be made payable to Lovejoy & Rimer, Trustee, ATTN: Chris Jarboe, 65 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06851.

  1. I’m so so sorry for your loss. I am a special education teacher at NCHS and we worked very closely together. She had a beautiful smile and wonderful outlook on life. She was passionate about her teaching and she strived to be best she could be. She brought the rest of us along with her. I will miss her very much. Sending much love and prayers to your family and ours as we grieve this sudden loss.

  • To the Devine Family,
Kelly’s bright smile and positive attitude at New Canaan High School was a bright spot for our daughter. She had a can do attitude taking leadership of any tasks or responsibilities. Kelly most recently was the club sponsor for our daughter and her friend to raise funds for children unable to fund their swimming equipment needs. Our deepest sympathies on such great loss. Kelly will be greatly missed.

  • I first met Kelly eight years ago when we co-taught eighth grade language arts together at Saxe. Over the years, we became close friends. She always made me smile, would lend an ear and offer thoughtful advice, and was a special friend. She cared about her students, and they all cared about her in return. I feel honored to have worked with her and been her friend. I will miss her very much. Sending love and prayers as we all grieve this loss.

You have a lot to be proud of – such a successful and smart woman with many accomplishments. May your memories comfort you.

  • Both of my children (Megan and Robby) were blessed to have Kelly as their teacher. Without question….they both will tell you that she was the best teacher they ever had AND that she was so much more than that to her students. She got to know them as people and helped them to develop into young adults. Whether it was opening up her classroom at lunch time or attending the kids games….she was present to them and she was extraordinary.

Coincidentally, just last week I caught a glimpse of my son’s “Child Times” and I thought about all of the work the kids and teachers put into that project. In memory of Kelly we pulled them out yesterday and looked through them. Although she lived a short life she touched so many people in her time here.

We live in Denver Colorado now so we will not be able to attend the services. However we will be thinking and praying for all of you and we will NEVER forget her.

  • “DID YOU EVER KNOW THAT YOU’RE MY HERO” — I just heard one of my favorite students died — she was one of my fifth grade students quite a few years ago — she became a teacher — since I had her in fifth grade she never failed to send me a birthday card every year – a few years after I taught her she send me this – she wrote in her English class. This poem is one of my most prized possessions. My heart is full of sadness but I was so blessed to have had her in my life. This is her poem:

“Did you ever know that you are my Hero” Have you ever had a teacher who stayed up all night to roast a turkey so that your class could have a Thanksgiving dinner together? Have you ever had a teacher who inspired the class to write a book, and then paid for it to be published so that all the students could have a copy? Have you ever had a teacher put on the play “West Side Story” with real costumes, settings, and parts, and then filmed it so you could see yourself performing? Have you ever had a teacher whom you could always count on to be there for you? Well, I have. And these are some of the things that make the teacher I had in fifth grade so special. Her name is Ms. Merturi.

She is my heroine because she does all the “extras”. There is nothing in her teacher’s contract that requires her to go to activities outside of regular school hours. But her students will meet her at basketball and baseball games, or dance recitals and concerts. She also stays after school to give students extra help – not just once in a while, but every single week.

A heroine, by definition, is any woman regarded as an ideal or model. Ms. Merturi is certainly an ideal teacher. She challenges her students academically, socially, and morally. She is sensitive to events occurring outside of the classroom that have an effect on her pupils. For example, our school, St. Philip’s was closing down. It was a stressful time for all. Ms. Merturi invited small groups of students to stay after school one day a week for a month to help clean up the classroom. We did some cleaning and then had pizza and soda that Ms. Merturi had bought for us. It was during times like this that I came to admire her so. She spent time talking with and listening to each and every student.

Ms. Merturi places a lot of trust in her students. She treats them as if they were her own children. She takes the time to deal with the concerns of ten and eleven year old boys and girls, no matter how busy she is.

I often thought about becoming a teacher, and as Bette Midler so beautifully sings, she’s “everything I wish I could be”. Kelly Devine

Rest in Peace, my dear student/child. I will miss you and that yearly birthday card that kept me updated on you and your beautiful family. I love you! May the angels watch over you. You will forever be in my heart. Your fifth grade teacher XOXO

  • To The Devine Family,

Kelly and I went to W&M together, swam together, and spent the last 15 years catching up every so often whether it was driving down to Homecoming together, meeting-up in NYC, NJ, or CT, painting Kim’s nails at your home when Kim was just 5 years old 🙂 or just trading silly emails about life’s “trials and tribulations.” Mostly though, we just laughed. She could always make me laugh. Her attitude was infectious, and each time I was with her, I felt uplifted. My heart goes out to you during this very difficult time, and you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

  • Ms. Devine was truly an amazing educator, one of the best at her craft. She will be missed by all the students who’s lives she has had a perpetual and resounding positive impact on. Her ability to control the classroom and her keen sense of humor will be the memories that I will treasure for the rest of my life. One of those memories that I am quite fond of was one day arriving to Saxe Middle School to a smiling Ms. Devine, her class was my first period. Upon sitting down in the back of the class, where Ms. Devine hopefully wouldn’t see my phone, yet somehow always did, she asked for all the class to put their phones away. I, of course, did not put my phone away and Ms. Devine spent the entire class lecturing me as to why receiving a Language Arts education was vital to my growth and development and why technology is ruining the education process. Ms. Devine will forever have a special place in my heart, not only as a beloved teacher, but as someone who I could truly trust as a friend. May Ms. Devine forever rest in peace.

  • Dear Devine family:

I posted this elsewhere, but I thought you all should know what Kelly meant to me. We swam together at W&M. I was a few years below her and she was very much my hero:

“Like me, she was a walk-on butterflier–unlike me, she had to fight tooth and nail for her spot. Her fight paved the way for me and a lot of other people to walk on and be accepted and even excel. She took me under her wing immediately and helped shape me into an athlete that could withstand the workload. Her tenacity, her leadership, her friendship, and her irrepressible good spirits got me through a tough first year when I was pretty sure I didn’t belong. She was exactly the role model I needed.”

One of the best people I have ever met.

  • To the Devine Family,

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear about Kelly’s passing. She was among my first friends at W&M our freshman year and I dove with her on the swim team there. I have an extensive number of memories involving Kelly and she was one of those special people where every one of them reflects positively on her. I always felt that you could count on her no matter what. My time in college and on the team was happier and more fun because she was part of them. Kelly was one of the loveliest people I have ever met – caring, uplifting, hard-working, sincere, and such fun to be around. I’m so grateful to have known her.

I’m incredibly sorry for your loss and for all of those whose lives she touched. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

  • One of a kind… we have shed many tears these last few days, even smiled at the thought of the times we laughed with Kelly. She touched more young people in her 36 years than most could ever dream of in two lifetimes. Kelly left her legacy with all of us, we were blessed to have known her, and she is in God’s hands now. Our deepest sympathies to the Devine family.

  • Dear Devine family. I am so sorry for your loss. I am honored to have recruited Kelly to William & Mary and coached Kelly for her freshman year there. I also admired watching her brother swim in the ACC. You are a tremendous family and my heart hurts for you. Please know the Tribe Nation is praying for you all and we have all lost a very special person. The more I read on Kelly the more I realize what an outstanding woman she became. Please accept my condolences. Ned Skinner

  • We are so sorry for the loss of Kelly. We met Coach Kelly two years ago when our then 7-year old twins joined her fabled S&CC swim team. We were quickly impressed by every aspect of her as a coach but even more impressive was the woman herself. She was supportive, fair, and kind. She built a team with a culture of kindness and teamwork. We will deeply miss our beloved swim coach. She was truly one of a kind. To her family, you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

  • Kelly was a great friend and colleague who inspired me to be a better person, teacher, and soul. I remember spending every Friday afternoon at Saxe planning our lessons for our eighth grade students trying to incorporate activities that would lead to excitement and knowledge. She always thought of others, found ways to inspire a person even in the darkest hours, and knew how to make you laugh. My deepest sympathies go out to the entire family at this time.

  • Kelly was loved by students and teachers–all who were greeted by her warm smile and acceptance. As she must have shared stories of the English department at the HIgh School, she shared wonderful, loving stories of you–her pride and joy. Having met you, I now understand how Kelly acquired her values.

  • My deepest condolences. Kelly was one of a kind. My brothers swam at Zeus and I have known her for years as a fellow coach in FCSL. Kelly and her team were the embodiment of the FCSL mantra to promote strong values of sportsmanship, individual development, and fun. We will all miss her enthusiasm, positivity, and smile. Her kindness made everyone around her better. She will truly be missed. My deepest sympathies go out to your family.

  • Words cannot express our sorrow. Because of who Kelly was, we always felt connected to your family. She was so loved and she admired her family so much you were a part of everything she did.
We are all thankful for our time with her because we are all better because of her. Kelly was consistent, thoughtful and kind- qualities that allowed her to be an incredible teacher and coach. As Kat said to Whitney today, the best thing you can do is live like Kelly. We will do our best. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Devine family.

We are so sorry for your loss. Kelly was not only a coach to our boys, but a kind and compassionate friend as well. Without her positive encouragement, they would not have become the swimmers they are today. She was one in a million and will be tremendously missed. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

  • Dear Devine Family, It is difficult to know what to say during this time of sudden loss, when there are no words to soften the pain of a young woman passing all too soon. Please know that you are all being thought about with special love. May your spirits be touched by the love of family and friends that surrounds you. May this love and caring give you strength and hope for tomorrow, when the healing begins.
Being a parent, I can’t begin to imagine the effect of the loss of a child. It is so unnatural. Kelly was a special, well regarded and accomplished woman. I wish for you all that you will always feel Kelly near in every treasured memory.
    Sincerest condolences and Love,

  • Ms. Devine was not only an unbelievable teacher, mentor and coach, but an inspiring friend and individual. There are no words to describe how much her presence was valued, and how greatly she will be missed. I remember when I was in 8th grade, she told me that I had a special gift as a writer, and that no matter where I went in life, I would always have my writing. To this day, she has been the reason that I take a journalism class in high school, and am going to continue in the “communication” direction during my college years. I am so beyond thankful to have had the time I did with her, because she instilled something special in me. No matter what we were doing in class, she always found a way to connect with each of us on a different, more personal level. She was a teacher who took her relationships with each student beyond the classroom. She went out of her way to make sure every student felt comfortable and that if we needed anything, she was always there. I created a bond with her that followed me to high school. It was just the other day that I passed her in the hallway and saw her bright smile, and my day was instantly better. The memories I have with her will last a life time, and I know she will be looking down on all of us. My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Devine family, as well as every individual she touched, as there is no one like Kelly. Forever in my heart.

We were so sorry to hear of the lost of your daughter, Kelly. In such a short life she accomplished so much which is rewarding within itself. You must be very proud of her. • I imagine not many will see this, but I just want to thank everyone for their support. It has been unbelievable.
Why a healthy and athletic 36- year old with no medical history would suffer a massive heart attack is something we will never understand. The outpouring from all her various communities is what is helping to keep us going.

  • Devine Family,
I’ve been trying to find the words to express my condolences to you. I am so sorry for your enormous loss. Kelly and I met freshman year and swam together. I have so many memories that involve her both inside and outside of the pool. I remember how excited she was a she waited for the birth of Kim and I remember walking with her to the Rec. Center before her time trial where she earned her spot on the team. I remember going to mass with her and going through recruitment together. I will always remember Kelly for her Tribe Pride. Regardless of the sporting event, Kelly would be there cheering! She always had a smile on her face and a positive attitude. She was a light in the life of many and she will be sorely missed.

  • To the entire Devine Family,
Words can not express how sorry we are for your loss – no family should have to experience this awful tragedy. We were part of Kelly’s extended family at Shore & Country: Kalen and Isabel swam for her, and like others have noted, they credit their love of and passion for competitive swimming to Kelly. She was such a remarkable, kind, wonderful, genuine person – really a rare breed. Kelly made everyone she came in contact with smile – both young and old and she brought joy to so many. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with with you all.

  • I also was friends with Kelly and swam with her at W&M. I regret that Kelly and I have not stayed in touch over the years, but I enjoyed seeing her posts and photos on Facebook. I am so sorry for your loss and sending lots of love your way. I remember her as kind, smart, and fun. I also remember that time trial from freshman year–it was so stressful at the time, and she nailed it to gain a place on the team. I am grateful for our friendship. We will miss you, Kelly.
