Kevin L. Simms

October 10, 1960 - January 22, 2014

Norwalk native Kevin L. Simms, 53, departed this life Tuesday, January 22, 2014. His mother Jessica Simms was at his bedside.  Kevin was the eldest son of the late William “Philly Red” Simms.

Kevin was a graduate Clark-Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA with a B.S. degree in Finance. He was a long standing, proud brother of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and a regular attendee of the annual homecoming celebration held in Atlanta. The A-T-L captured his heart with its southern charm and unlimited activities.

He was employed by Xerox Corporation, Norwalk, CT, Barclay’s Bank, Yonkers, NY  and a myriad of private sector employers.

Kevin’s impeccable fashion sense and love for Manhattan was passed down from his father, William. His keen eye for style is summed up and stated simply by Giorgio Armani, “The difference between style and fashion is quality.”

Known as a New York area sports fan–basketball (NY Knicks), baseball (NY Yankees) and football (NY Giants), Kevin wore his teams’ sportswear with great pride. To say he enjoyed a lively, boisterous discussion about his teams is an understatement. Be able to defend your position when supporting a rival NY team.

The New York Daily News was a staple among Kevin’s reading material and he was acutely aware of current events. One of his most treasured experiences was casting his ballot in two elections for our President Barack Obama.

Kevin accepted Christ in Atlanta, GA; he joined Hillside Chapel and Truth Center in the early 90’s and he sang with the men’s choir.  One of his favorite scriptures was “I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)

Though his taste in music was eclectic, Kevin had a strong affinity for the musical talent of Sade and the rap genius of Biggie Smalls and Tupac.

In addition to his mother, Kevin leaves fond and loving memories to be cherished by his siblings René M. Gibson of Bridgeport, CT; Todd A. Fagan (Teresa) Norwalk, CT; Andre Reynolds (Denise) of Richmond, CA; Shonda Baskin (Joseph) of Norwalk, CT; Tammy Sanchez (Lewis) of Bridgeport, CT;  Jerith T. Scott of Hampton, Virginia; Jeffery Simms of Tampa, FL; Shantelle Danielle Simms of New York, New York.

Additional family members include: several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a long time, best friend Morris Rowser of Rockville, Maryland.

  1. Ms. Jesse, I amsadden to hear about Kevin. When I lived on Suncrest Rd. he would often come and visit me when he was at Arlene’s. He found Kevin to be pleasant company and enjoyed his visits. Although it had been years since I had seen or spoke with him, I was still sadden to hear of this. God Bless you Ms. Jesse. Carolyn Askew

  • As the Dean of Hops for Brother Kevin Simms, the passing of my brother saddens me deeply but I am heartened that his suffering has come to and end. His enthusiasm made my life special and his brotherhood gave our relationship meaning. Mother Jessie I grieve with thee.
