Ralph Anthony DeMassa

August 13, 1922 - January 27, 2011

Ralph Anthony DeMassa 88, husband of Nancy DeMassa passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Norwalk Hospital.  Born August 13, 1922, in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Ernest DeMassa and Anna DeMassa.

Ralph grew up in Norwalk where at the age of 15 he started work at odd jobs and later as a shoemaker to help support his mother and younger brothers through the depression.  When his country called, Ralph served in the U.S. Army’s Third Armored Division 486th AAA Battalion in a frontline combat team. His Division served with distinction through five major campaigns until the end of the war.

When Ralph returned home he reentered the work force starting small businesses with family and friends. He later settled on general contracting and home remodeling in Fairfield County, retiring at 76.

During this time he would meet Nancy and start a family of his own. Ralph loved to read and earned an associates degree in electronics. As a father he would spend time with his growing children and later delighted in his granddaughters. His devotion to family, strong beliefs, and ever-helpful presence made him both loved and admired. He will be profoundly missed.

He is survived by sons Ralph, John, and Robert; his wife Nancy of 54 years; and 3 granddaughters.

  1. Dear Nancy and Family: It was with great sadness that I heard of my “Goomba Ralph’s” death. Although I have not called hm that for years, when I was little, before Nancy and famiy came that we would usually see him a Sunday Dinner. I was also glad to have seen him on a recent visit in CT. Sorry that I can not come to pay my respects, but I am in Florida and expecting Bishop Lori to our home for his 7th Annual Snowbird Brunch and afraid that bad weather might strand me in CT. Since we’re expecting more than 120 people, I can not take the chance. Please know that both Vinny and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Connie

    God Daughter Connie -
  • My deepest sympathies to the entire DeMassa family. I have had the priviledge of working with his son Ralph for over 12 years and he shared many family memories, especially around his father. You have a family that is very special and truly defines the meaning “family”. May you rest in peace Mr. Demassa, I’m confident your memories will last forever. We are forever indebted for your service.
