Long time Westport resident, Robert Satter, age 94 of Westport, CT passed away on October 26 after a brief illness.
Bob, as he was known as to family and friends, was born in 1923 in Bennington, VT. After graduating DeWitt Clinton High School in New York, Bob moved to Norwalk and with the start of World War II enlisted in the Army-Air Force. Stationed in London, Bob flew in over 30 missions as a radio operator and belly gunner, being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and two battle stars as well as the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.
He married the love of his life Jean in 1946 and in 1954 settled down in Westport where they raised their two sons Keith and Blair.
Bob had a successful photography business over 40 years and was an avid sailor often known in the summers to be “On Location” his sailboat.
He was an avid reader, lover of Jeopardy and the UConn Women’s Basketball team but loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends telling stories. He was a regular at Gold’s in Westport and was well recognized in his red Mustang convertible.
Two years ago, the Town of Westport honored Bob by naming him Grand Marshall of the annual Memorial Day Parade.
Bob will be missed by many, but forgotten by no one that knew him.
He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Jean, and his daughter-in-law Debbie Satter. Along with his sons, Bob is survived by his daughters-in-law Ellen Satter, (Trumbull, CT) and Betsy Bernstein (Harrison, NY), and his grandchildren, Alex Panagos, Daniel Satter, Lori, Birrell and her husband, Terran, and Rachel Satter.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 27 at Congregation Beth El, East Avenue, Norwalk.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Westport, CT Public Library.
