Vaneta Theodore Gordon

Vaneta Theodore Gordon, 80, died peacefully at Norwalk Hospital surrounded by family on Wednesday April 26, 2017.
“Aunt Birdie” or “Nana” as she was affectionately known to her friends and relatives, was born on January 12, 1937, in Pepper, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, to the late Alma Jane Cole and the late Ivan “Ismay” Gordon. She was the eldest of seven.
She attended Pepper Elementary School and Santa Cruz Technical School in Jamaica, where she pursued a degree in Secretarial Studies. She then moved to England at the age of 22 to pursue a degree and career in nursing.
Her journey led her to Holloway Sanatorium in Surrey, England where she worked and achieved two nursing degrees. In 1979, Vaneta embarked on a new journey to the United States where she continued to thrive in the nursing field. This new journey led her to Stamford Hospital where she devoted 35 years of service.
Vaneta loved tennis, politics, church, and a good party. She was also devoted to family. Her strong work ethics and determination afforded her the ability to open the doors of opportunity for her children and siblings by bringing them to the United States. Her wisdom and leadership will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her son, Roy (Donna) Colley of Norwalk; daughter, Shelia (Glen) Moncrieffe of Bridgeport; grandchildren: Lloyd (Season) Colley, Chantel (Junior) Mullings, Lenore Moncrieffe, Shardae Colley all of Bridgeport, and Vanessa Colley of New York; great-grandchildren: Jahnice, Justin, Jared, London, and Junior; siblings: Leathe White of New York, Delroy Whyte of Bridgeport, and Dalton White of England; a special niece, Nadine White of Maryland; a special nephew, Nicholas White of New York; and a host of other nieces, relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings: Audrey White, Gretel White, Uton White, and Ruth Gordon.
Viewing will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 on Thursday, May 4, at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Ave., Norwalk, CT. Funeral Service will be held Friday, May 5, at 11:00 AM at Christ Episcopal Church, 2 Emerson St., Norwalk, CT.
