William Dill Rutherford


William “Dill” Rutherford, of Norwalk, husband of the late Jeanne Burr Rutherford, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2015, at Norwalk Hospital.

Born in Glenwood, Long Island, he was the son of the late Dill and Mary Ann Mulligan Rutherford. He was a resident of Darien and then resided in Norwalk for the last sixty-five years.

Dill graduated from Darien High School, and then served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He later worked for C. L. & P.; where he retired after a forty-two year career. He was a proud member of the Marine Corps League, Mahackemo Detachment; where he dedicated many years honoring and helping our veterans. He was also a dedicated member of the American Legion and the V. F. W. All who met him saw the gleam in his eyes as he spoke of the subject closet to his heart: his patriotism. He and his beloved wife Jeanne were fifty plus year “Golden” members of the Shore and Country Club, where they spent many beautiful summers with their family and friends. Dill loved his annual trips to Cape Cod with Jeanne and his children.

He is survived by sons; Tom, of Norwalk, Jeff and his wife, Joyce, of New Milford, Tracey, of St. Petersburg, Florida, and his daughter; Jill {Rutherford} Lee and her husband Emmett, of Monroe, his seven grandchildren; Aimee, Megan, and Michael, of Florida, Tyler, of North Carolina, and Brandon, Ryan and Marissa, all of Monroe. He is also survived by his siblings; John, of Virginia, Doris {Rutherford} Mathias of Chester, Ann {Rutherford} Ohr, of Washington Depot, and Jeanne {Rutherford} Duddy, of Massachusetts.

Friends may call Friday, January 30th, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk.

A prayer service will take place on Saturday, January 31st, at 10:00 AM in Collins Funeral Home. Interment will immediately follow in Willowbrook Cemetery, 395 Main Street, Westport, CT.

  1. Dill’s family, I was saddened to read of Dill’s passing. I worked with and for him from 1961 until he retired. He was one of the best men that I had the privilege of working for, he was truly a GOOD GUY.
